In this article I will go over in detail everything I do when doing keyword research with google keyword planner. Some people say keyword research should begin even before building a website. I tend to agree but this is of course not a set rule, every website can be optimized but there are some advantages in getting a domain which is already powerful and has keywords you may wish to rank for in it. Anyway that’s a bit more involved than I’m going to get into right here.
So the first thing to do would be find the most prominent searches for keywords your going for. For this we would pick the most obvious keywords and begin looking at search volumes. I pick 4 or 5 keywords which are obvious when I think about what to rank the site for. By taking these 4 or 5 and looking at how much volume is searched monthly in google (get search volume and trends) you may be suprized at which searches have the most volume, or you may confirm what you already know.
The next thing I like to do is search each of these terms in Google and look at the bottom of the serps page for the similar searches. This is a goldmine for long tail searches. If a term shows up here we also know that it has some search volume. So for the original 4-5 terms I then get long tail variations for each of those by looking at the related searches. All the while I am putting these into a file for using in a bit. I can further research by looking at how much competition there is for each of these. When I click the related search what types of websites are showing up? If there are lots of high power websites I know that probably isn’t the keyword I want to focus on with a new website.
I also like to use search modifiers like inanchor:”keyword” or intitle:”keyword” you can also put a + between them and look at the results. At the top of the page when you do these searches look at the # of results. If there are millions of websites with backlinks with the same keyword showing up in the inanchor search, this will mean high competition. The same goes for intitle searches, this means people are regularly building pages specifically targeting that search. You are nearly always going to have lots of websites with the anchor or title text for any higher volume searches, but there are plenty lower volume searches that are ignored. What we are looking for is search volumes between 100-1000 with low competition, but what we hope to find in this process is one of those gems with a couple thousand searches and no competition.
So we have an ever growing list, and now we’re ready to… wait we’re going to make the list we have much larger? Yep. So the next step is putting the list of keywords we have expanded into the keyword planner (search for new keywords using a phrase, website, or category), but not all at once. What we want is the list to multiply numerous times so we’ll put each term into the planner and download the results. we put the downloaded files into a folder for compiling in just a bit. We will create a batch file, by creating a file with the extention .bat and holding the text”copy *.csv importfile.csv”. We save it into the folder which holds all of our downloaded data from Google and when we click it will create one single file for us to work in.
Now that we have a list of thousands of terms we can filter out to see those terms with some search volume, and look at the cost per click to see which may have less competition but may convert well. I like to try to combine 2 keywords when possible. Just as an example say “best florist delivery” gets 400 searches and “florist delivery fast” gets 250 searches. I will create the page to target “best florist delivery fast” and therefore actually be optimized for both.
There are some tricks I like to do such as, creating a column which can show the characters in the keyword column. I can then order it by that column and find longer tail searches which will have the higher search volumes with a quick visual scan of the document. I can quickly find long tail keywords with enough search volumes to create a website around. With a website targeting 10 long tail searches with 200 clicks per month it is easy to rank pretty quickly and and a great starting point for building up the traffic in that niche.
